No single piece of legislation stands in isolation and the purpose of this course is to look at the basic principles of the Data Protection Act 1998, Freedom of Information Act 2000 and Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and how they interact with each other and other legislation.The course will examine:-

  • Definition of personal data
  • The eight DP principles
  • Data Sharing
  • Definition of environmental data
  • Access to both personal and non personal data
  • Access to personal data by third parties including the secondary use of Council Tax data
  • Application of exemptions and exceptions
  • Application of the Public Interest Test
  • Interaction between the enactments and other legislation

The course will also look at the standards recommended for Information Rights Professionals by the Government. (The course speaker, Alan Stead, is a member of the Qualifications and Standards Group at the MOJ)

This course would be ideal for delegates who are new to the profession or need to brush up on information rights as a whole.
